Essential Tips for Storing Your Kayak Safely This Fall

Updated: Jan 31

For many people, fall signals the end of paddling season. Before you put away your kayak for the year, consider taking a few steps to ensure it's stored safely. This way, it will be ready to go when the weather improves in the spring.

If you store your kayak outside, these tips are for you.

Tip 1 - Give It a Little Love Before You Put It Away

Start by giving your kayak a quick rinse to clean it off. Pay special attention to foot pedals and rudder components. These areas often accumulate dirt and grit. Keeping them clean will help prevent problems in the future.

If you want to go the extra mile, sponge out the hatches. For rubber hatches, apply some lubricant like 303 aerospace protectant. Wipe the hatches with a clean cloth. This will keep your hatches supple and make them easier to get on and off.

Tip 2 - Get It Out of the Elements

The best thing you can do when storing your kayak—any time, not just in the off-season—is to get your boat out of the weather. Keeping the sun off in the summer will prolong the life of your kayak. Additionally, keeping rain and debris like leaves or pine needles off during the winter will also help maintain its condition.

Getting your kayak out of the elements can be as simple as moving it undercover if storing it outside or moving it inside if possible.

A full kayak cover such as this one from Danuu can be a great investment. The kayak stands can also help keep critters out.

Tip 3 - Keep It Covered

This is somewhat an extension of keeping your kayak out of the elements, but it also helps keep critters out of your cockpit. A full cover, like the one pictured above, is ideal as it protects the entire kayak. A more budget-friendly option is a cockpit cover.

If nothing else, store your kayak upside down to prevent debris from getting inside.

Tip 4 - Get It Off the Ground

From stands to wall mounts and webbing hoists, there are many options for storing your kayak off the ground. The best option depends on your space and budget.

Tip 5 - Dryer Sheets

Yes, you read that right. Here at NWOC, we have had great success keeping otters and raccoons out of our kayaks by placing dryer sheets in the cockpit. This also makes your kayak smell nice and fresh come spring.

Additional Tips for Kayak Storage

Tip 6 - Inspect for Damage

Before storing your kayak, inspect it for any damage. Look for cracks, scratches, or other signs of wear. If you find any issues, consider repairing them before storing your kayak. This will help ensure it's in good condition for next season.

Tip 7 - Store It in a Cool, Dry Place

If possible, store your kayak in a cool, dry place. Extreme temperatures can affect the materials of your kayak. A garage or shed is often a good choice. Avoid areas with high humidity, as this can lead to mold or mildew.

Tip 8 - Remove Accessories

Before storing, remove any accessories such as paddles, life jackets, or gear. This will help prevent damage to both the kayak and the accessories. Store them separately in a dry place.

Tip 9 - Use a Kayak Rack

If you have the space, consider investing in a kayak rack. This will keep your kayak elevated and protected from the ground. It also makes it easier to access your kayak when you're ready to hit the water again.

Tip 10 - Document Your Storage Process

Take notes on how you stored your kayak. This can include details about cleaning, repairs, and where you stored it. This documentation will be helpful when you prepare to use your kayak again in the spring.

By taking a little time in the fall to clean and protect your kayak, you can not only keep it in good shape but also make it faster and easier to get back on the water in the spring.

Following these tips will ensure your kayak is well cared for during the off-season. Enjoy your time away from the water, knowing that your kayak is ready for your next adventure!
