Basic Strokes and Rescue

We have concluded our classes for the 2025 Season

2026 Class dates are posted. Online booking available now! Private Instruction on Lake Union is still available through the fall.

Book online, call the shop (206) 281-9694 or stop by to register with the class fee to hold each spot. Refundable up to 2 weeks before class start.

Basic Strokes

2.5 hour class on Lake Union

This class is our basic water session for beginners who are just checking out the sport, and want to learn some proper paddling technique. We encourage students to also take the basic rescue class.

 

Students in this class will practice basic boat handling skills, including an efficient forward stroke, turning strokes, reverse strokes, and moving the boat laterally. The instructors will demonstrate solo and assisted rescue techniques at the end of class, earlier if necessary!

 

This class will prepare you for sheltered paddling in recreational or sea kayaks. To gain more open water skills, take the Fundamentals of Sea Kayaking class.

​Students for this class must be 16 years of age or older.​

Cost

$95/person includes boat & gear

For class we'll fit you into an Old Town or Delta Kayak, and have larger fitting options as well. Students are also welcome to use their own equipment.

Basic Rescue

2.5 hour class on Lake Union

Knowing how to get back into a capsized kayak is a must for the sea kayaker. During this two and a half hour session students will practice the solo paddle float rescue and the assisted T-rescue. We will show you multiple different ways of getting back into the kayak from the water.

 

Bracing strokes to prevent a capsize along with draw strokes will be covered as well.

​Students for this class must be 16 years of age or older.​

Cost

$125/person includes boat, dry suit & gear

For class we'll fit you into an Old Town or Delta kayak, and have larger fitting options as well along with a Kokatat drysuit. Students are also welcome to use their own equipment.
